Hello All,
As many of you have already noticed, yesterday, EPA personnel and contractors mobilized at the Halaco Superfund Site to begin preparations for demolition of the two abandoned, structurally unsafe buildings. EPA proposed demolition of the buildings in December 2009 and, after consideration of public comments, has made a formal decision to complete the work as proposed.
The tentative schedule is to complete preparations this week and begin demolition on Monday, February 15, 2010. We will begin by removing the air pollution control equipment located to the south of the two buildings, then demolish the smaller building, and lastly demolish the larger building visible from the main gate along Perkins Rd. As part of the project, we will also be removing much of the non-hazardous debris located around the buildings. The City of Oxnard has generously agreed to transport and dispose of the debris.
We are preparing a fact sheet that will provide additional details on the demolition work and on EPA’s testing program. We hope to distribute the fact sheet later this week or early next week by way of postal mail, and this email list.
Please feel free to contact the EPA Project Manager, Wayne Praskins, at praskins.wayne@epa.gov (415.972.3181) if you have any questions about the demolition or EPA's testing program, or contact me if you have any questions realting to noticing or community relations.
